Community Action Public Hearings this week and next week

 

CAC will be hosting Community Action Public Hearings in North County at the CAC Chapel St. office this Thursday (4/27) from 3 – 4 pm and in South County at the CAC Goleta Central office next Friday 5/5/17 (Cinco de Mayo!) from 3 – 4 pm.

 

This is a chance for everyone in the community to voice opinions about the needs of people living in poverty in our County. We are also looking for ideas about the best way to meet those needs and solve problems facing the low income community.

 

Public Hearing Notices in both Spanish and English are here.

 

Please attend and invite others to attend. We are especially interested in reaching out to those living in poverty and representatives of organizations that serve the low income community.

Help & Hope

 

The Alzheimer's Association, California Central Chapter Help & Hope two-day seminar aims to educate the public, covering a variety of topics for the different stages of dementia and Alzheimer's, in Santa Barbara, on Saturday, May 6 and 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Valle Verde Senior Living.

 

Help & Hope provides essential information to promote quality of life and family health. In the two-day seminar, families attend lectures and workshops specially designed for those in the early stages of Alzheimer’s or related dementia and their partners.

 

Topics will include: Understanding the Diagnosis, Communication Strategies, Strong Body-Strong Mind, Care for Self, Care for Others, Brain Fitness Strategies and Art Therapy.

 

This is a complimentary offering from the Alzheimer’s Association. However, space is limited and registration is required. To register or for more information, please contact Marcy Oswald.

Long, Intensive Caregiving: Insights on Dementia Caregivers and the Public Health Response

In March, the Alzheimer's Association hosted a national webinar featuring the 2015 BRFSS Caregiver data and public health policy implications. Atlas of Caregiving Event Invitation

Reimagine Philanthropy

 

We are pleased to extend an invitation to participate in a conversation of how the collection and use of data to assist family caregivers is being used by the Santa Barbara Foundation to further the goals of our Community Caregiving Initiative.  We have partnered with the Atlas of Caregiving to lead this effort and are fortunate to welcome them to present some of their work on April 25^th at 5:30 p.m. at the Impact Hub in Santa Barbara.  We would love to have you join us and participate in the discussion.  I hope you’ll be able to attend and please feel free to share this invitation with others who may be interested.  Additional information and registration details can be found at the links below:

What is the Quantified Self?

Quantified Self is a global community of people who use data to improve their lives. There are hundreds of connected gadgets and countless apps to help people track their habits, learn things about themselves and improve their health. The Santa Barbara Foundation is engaging in the movement by teaming up with Atlas of Caregiving to explore how Quantified Self ideas can help family caregivers - those caring for family or friends who need assistance because of illness, disability, or aging - in Santa Barbara County.

What is a family caregiver?

A family caregiver is a person that is responsible for the daily needs of another person. This responsibility includes physical, emotional, and often financial support of another person who is unable to care for him/herself. For more information on family caregiving check out the Santa Barbara Foundation's Community Caregiving Initiative.

What may I anticipate at this event?

Learning. This event is a discussion and dialogue between our experts and the community about self-tracking, identifying family caregivers, and finding common tools and understanding on how to benefit from technology to enhance our lives. We need you to come and share your insights with the community!

Central Coast Stop Senior Scams Working Group

Central Coast Stop Senior Scams Working Group (tentative title for the group) now has a set date for this year for quarterly meetings.  The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 from 10am to 12pm. 

 

The new location (for the year) will be at the Santa Barbara County Dept. of Social Services.   I have been told there should be ample free parking as well.  Thanks to Akiles Ceron for getting this conference room for us to meet for the rest of the year.  (Additional dates are Tuesday, August 1 and Tuesday, November 7).
