2019 State Advocacy Day

The 2019 State Advocacy Day registration is now open! State Advocacy Day is a one day event where advocates from all across California, like yourself, meet in Sacramento and share their passion to end Alzheimer's with their local elected officials. 

 

This year State Advocacy Day is on February 5th. Many  advocates fly up and down on the same day to attend the event. You must register before January 18th!

Lower risk of Breast Cancer

Women who exercise at least two and half hours a week have a lower risk of breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.  Cottage Health is teaming up with Jenny Schatzle for the Step Up to Prevent Breast Cancer event.  Free one-hour fitness classes will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at the Jenny Schatzle Program.  Classes will be offered at noon and 1:30 p.m.

Caregiver Training

FEMA is offering a free training on Natural Disaster Awareness for Caregivers. It will be held on September 13, 2018 at the Santa Barbara City Fire Department on 121 W. Carrillo, Santa Barbara, CA. There will be two offerings: 8:00am - 12:00pm or 1:00pm to 5:00pm.

New Alzheimer's publication

Our new 12-page newspaper insert provides vital Alzheimer's information for North Santa Barbara County residents. See it for yourself!

In June each year, the Alzheimer's Association partners with the Santa Maria Times to publish a special advertising supplement. This year's edition seeks to educate, engage, and empower our community with articles highlighting programs, services, and the latest techniques and resources to enhance the quality of life of those affected with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.

It was released June 19 in the Santa Maria Times, June 20 in the Lompoc Record, and June 21 in the Santa Ynez Valley News. Click here to see it!

Hospice of SB collecting items

There is a week left of Hospice of Santa Barbara's campaign to collect sensory items for Friendship Center. Sensory items help our members to focus on something tangible and forget their worries for awhile.  

If you would like to participate, we encourage you to drop off new or gently used items such as coloring books, baby dolls, weighted blankets, fidget toys, and simple puzzles either in the lobby at our Montecito location at 89 Eucalyptus Lane or at Hospice of Santa Barbara's location at 2050 Alameda Padre Serra Suite 100 between the hours of 9-5.

The Area Agency on Aging is distributing Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons to eligible senior citizens in Santa Barbara County. The coupon books can be used to purchase up to $20 in fresh fruits and vegetables only at WIC-authorized Certified Farmers Markets in this area. Seniors over the age of 60 and on a limited income are eligible to receive the FREE coupon book. Materials for SB 1026

Here are the materials and information on SB 1026 (State Sen. Jackson's Fall Prevention Bill) mentioned at our meeting.

Thank you for voting to support SB 1026. The results of yesterday's Senate vote are that it passed 39 to 0! Hooray! It has been sent to the Assembly…which is where we now need to focus our requests for support!

Click here for the materials. The materials include the latest Version of the Bill, the two research reports discussed at the meeting, and a supplemental table to the Economic Burden report. Specifically, note that the Economic Burden document (see page 4 bottom left) states that CA is the state in the nation with the "highest estimated all payer health care spending for older adult falls." Note, however, that CA was NOT on the page 5 table. However, supplemental table, referenced on page 4, does include our CA data. Thank you to the Board of Supervisors for supporting SB 1026!

Report on EVV

A new report on Electronic Visit Verification (EVV) has been released by the National Association of States United for Aging and Disabilities (NASUAD).

The report, titled "Electronic Visit Verification: Implications for States, Providers, and Medicaid Participants," was developed in partnership with Jennifer Burnett, former Deputy Secretary of the Pennsylvania Office of Long Term Living.

The report describes key considerations and policy decisions that states should consider as they work to implement EVV systems in accordance with the mandate included in the 21st Century Cures Act.
The paper also examines different approaches that states may wish to use to establish EVV within their HCBS programs, and discusses some of the benefits and challenges associated with each approach. Lastly, it includes case studies of four states with existing EVV systems.

 Martha Roherty, NASUAD Executive Director, offered the following comments on the report release, "In accordance with the CURES Act, states must have electronic visit verification in place by January 1, 2019. There are many considerations that should be taken into account when developing a system that meets the statutory requirements while also improving quality of care and promoting participant choice. We developed this paper to assist states as they work towards EVV implementation in accordance with CURES. We think it will be a valuable resource both for the current efforts to come in compliance with CURES and beyond."

Some of the considerations discussed in this paper include:

• Setting goals and defining system requirements
• Ensuring robust stakeholder engagement
• Addressing the unique concerns of participants with disabilities
• Developing an implementation plan
• Performing a readiness review
• Utilizing a soft launch strategy
• Maintaining openness to new and updated technology
• Using EVV to promote quality improvement. 

NASUAD hopes that this report be a useful tool that assists states understand the options available to them and identify ways to promote overall quality of care and program integrity within the HCBS system.

Supporting Working Family Caregivers: Research Project Launch We're partnering with Human Impact Partners on a research project focused on California family caregivers and Paid Family Leave (PFL). Since 2004, less than one-eighth of Paid Family Leave claims have been to care for a seriously ill family member. Our aim is to learn how caregivers use Paid Family Leave, how to make PFL more accessible, and what other resources or supports caregivers need. The research project will kick off a 3-year campaign in which we will organize our members, build new partnerships, and work with legislators on education, outreach, and policy change. The survey will be live in April and we need your help to distribute it to caregivers in your network. If you can share the survey or want to get involved in the campaign, please sign up HERE.    Katie Wutchiett (LAAW) and Melisa Acoba (CA WFC) at the NNEDV Conference on March 8 CA Coalition Leads Workshop on Paid Sick and Safe Days in Las Vegas Family Values @Work, the California Work & Family Coalition, and Legal Aid at Work co-organized and led a session on organizing campaigns for Paid Sick and Safe Days at the National Network to End Domestic Violence conference on Economic Justice in Las Vegas on March 8. Coalition staff, Melisa Acoba, emphasized the importance of working in coalition to pass laws that truly support the needs of DV survivors and their families. "At the conference, we learned that financial abuse is a component in 99% of domestic violence cases. This is why policies that protect a survivor's job and wages are so important," she said. Coalition members will be working to pass AB 2841 (Gonzalez Fletcher) - an expansion of our current Paid Sick and Safe Days law - in California this year. See our policy updates below for how you can help.   AARP California Hosts Tele Town Halls Featuring the Coalition On March 13 and 21, Coalition members and staff got to participate in an AARP tele town hall on Caregivers and Paid Family Leave. This was a great way to get important information on our leave laws to thousands of Californians. Looking forward to more collaboration!   CA Family Leave Laws Training - May 2nd in LA - Save the Date! We invite community advocates to join us in LA on May 2nd to help make CA Paid Family Leave and other protections accessible and equitable for all. Advocates, providers, employers and community leaders will learn about key rights and prepare to educate their own clients / patients / members/ employees / communities. RSVP here! Coalition Priority Legislation Support AB 2841 (Gonzalez Fletcher) CA Paid Sick Days Expansion AB 2841 (Gonzalez Fletcher) would expand the number of paid sick days a California worker can accrue from 3 (in current law) to a minimum of 5 days a year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the 2018 flu season has been especially severe and people who contracted the flue need at least one week to recover. Please send letters of support to Assemblymember Gonzalez Fletcher and join us at the Hearing in Assembly Labor on April 4, 10:00 am in room 112 of the State Capitol. Letters of Support Needed: Berkeley City Council Considers 100% Paid Family Leave Berkeley City Council still has not voted on the proposed ordinance that would provide Berkeley workers with 100% paid family leave for 6 weeks to bond with a new child or care for seriously ill family member, with the supplemental pay to be provided by employers (small businesses are exempt). If you are a Berkeley resident, or have members who live in Berkeley, please email or call city councilmembers. Find a sample letter of support here. SB 937 (Wiener) – Workplace Lactation Accommodation – requires employers to support breastfeeding employees by having a written lactation policy and providing employees with a safe and comfortable lactation space that meets minimum requirements. SB 937 also requires newly constructed or renovated buildings of a certain size to include lactation spaces, and requires that the State develop a model policy.  These supports will ensure  working parents never have to choose between continuing to breastfeed and returning to work. Please send in your letters of support to the Senate Chair of Labor, Senator Bradford and join us at the Senate Labor Hearing on April 11th 9:30 am in room 2040 in the State Capitol. Save the date for an upcoming U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Stakeholder Meeting on Wednesday April 11, 2018, from 11:30 to 1:30 pm at the Independent Living Resource Center, 702 County Square Dr. Ventura, CA 93003

We are interested in hearing feedback from all stakeholders in Ventura and the surrounding areas related to disability access issues in connection with the 2017 fires and mudslides.  We are especially interested in your experiences, challenges, and recommendations related to accessibility for persons with disabilities.

During the April 11^th meeting, you will hear from DHS Officer for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Cameron Quinn, from Linda Mastandrea, Director of FEMA's Office of Disability Integration and Coordination, and from Regis Phelan, Acting Director of FEMA's Office of Equal Rights.
